    Oxfam Trailwalker Race for 2016

    Oxfam Trailwalker Race for 2016

In August of this year, our very own Victoria Braxton-Meadows undertook the ultimate challenge of completing the Oxfam Trailwalker Race for 2016!

Victoria tackled 100km of Australian bush within 48 hours in a team of four to make a difference by raising funds to help overcome poverty and injustice around the world.

Read all about her experience below.

At 8am Friday 19th August, I stepped under the enormous inflatable starting line of the Oxfam Trailwalker Race for 2016.  Roughly 18 hours later I was trying to figure out what on earth overcame me to enter such an event, and another 13 hours after that I swore that I wasn’t getting out of bed for a week!  Along with my team mates Cam, Noel and Brad we took off at a swift pace, perhaps a little too excited for the experience before us.

Oxfam is an international organisation with a focus on the alleviation of global poverty, and in the Sydney event alone last year over $2.2m was raised.  That’s a whole lot of poverty we sent packing!

The event itself is one of the most challenging I’ve ever attempted, and others include an 8 day trek of the Kokoda Track.  Leaving from the picturesque waterfront of Parsley Bay at Brooklyn and winding through a string of national parks, surrounded by incredible natural beauty, the final checkpoint is atop the headland at Balgowlah Heights with sweeping views of North Head and the open harbour.  Not a bad backdrop to cross the finish line after 31 hrs and 33mins.

The trail is divided up into 8 legs that range in distance from 8km to 15.5km with an enormous variety of inclines, steep descents and rugged bush tracks.  At each checkpoint we were greeted by an array of friendly faces with meals, hot drinks and most importantly continuous first aid!  Apart from the anticipated aching muscles and weariness we were afflicted with a range of foot and knee injuries that saw two of our four team members forced to ‘retire’ part way through the race and it became apparent that looking after your feet and toes during the race is paramount to a successful finish.

I was quite surprised to learn a number of things during the event, such as drinking almost constantly for the entire first day without ever needing to avail myself of the portaloo’s provided at check points!  I also discovered that you can indeed fall asleep whilst walking…….whilst likely to end with face planting a tree, I never the less pulled it off! The coolest thing for me was the realisation that even after 31 straight hours of exhausting physical exertion, your body is capable of somehow finding a hidden reserve of energy within the final climb to the finish line and even give you enough forward momentum to break into a jog.

With emotions running high (and a few tears I’m not ashamed to admit), Noel and I stumbled over the finish line and collapsed into a sea of hugging bodies as we were greeted by our beautiful and long suffering support team.  It seemed surreal that we had finished, and the previous 31 ½ hours of pain, sweat and effort had culminated in this amazing feeling of accomplishment.

And now, two months later, as I still await new toenails to grow and replace lost ones, I smile with excitement as an email pops into my inbox with registration details for next year’s race…………I’ve set the time to beat and so the training begins again!
